Andrew Staniland has been appointed as Morrisons’ new group trading director

We love it when Alumni stay in touch and keep us up to date with their latest news. It was great to read about one Class of 1998 pupil in FinancialNews.co.uk. Andrew Staniland, former Iceland executive, has been appointed as Morrisons’ new group trading director.

Staniland was initially anticipated to join Asda, replacing exiting commercial director Paul Gillow. His tenure at Iceland spanned four years, marking significant roles including group trading director. This move signifies Staniland’s return to Morrisons, where he previously held positions from 2012 to 2016. Underlining the strategic shift, Morrisons’ CEO praised Staniland’s impressive track record and alignment with company objectives.

Andrew Staniland has been appointed as the new group trading director at Morrisons, relinquishing his anticipated move to Asda. This career transition marks a return to Morrisons for Staniland, who previously served the company in various buying roles from 2012 to 2016. His extensive experience includes significant contributions to Iceland, where he operated as both trading director and group trading director over a four-year period.

Staniland’s move to Morrisons was initially unanticipated, as he was understood to be preparing to take over as commercial director at Asda, following the departure of Paul Gillow. This exit was part of a broader wave of senior management changes at Asda. However, the specifics of this intended appointment remain uncertain, leaving industry observers to speculate about the factors influencing Staniland’s decision.

Morrisons’ CEO, Rami Baitiéh, expressed high regard for Staniland’s capabilities, highlighting his previous accomplishments at companies like Iceland and Aldi, and underscoring his familiarity with Morrisons’ operational ethos from his prior tenure. Baitiéh’s remarks underscored the strategic importance of strengthening the supermarket’s leadership team amidst ongoing industry challenges. In conjunction with Staniland’s appointment, internal shifts within Morrisons have been announced, including James Badger’s transition from group commercial director to group strategy and transformation director. This realignment reflects Morrisons’ focus on adapting to market demands and enhancing its strategic planning and execution capabilities.
